Mid-Century Modern Made New

What a joy it was to remodel this mid-century modern home for Brooke and Ryan. When we first discussed this project with our clients, they were looking to not only increase the size of their kitchen, but also to open up their living areas to create a wide gathering space for their musical family. They often gathered for meals, games and musical collaboration with family and friends. The home, which had been built in 1969, had a dividing wall between the kitchen/family room areas and the formal dining and living rooms. We focused on the idea of dropping that dividing wall so that all gathering areas would be open to each other.

They also wanted to update and create more space in the kitchen. We considered several ways to accomplish this and came up with a beautiful plan. The new plan removed a line of upper depth cabinets from the throughway of the original kitchen, extended the sink side of the kitchen a couple more feet, shorted and widened their peninsula to create more of a table feel for in kitchen dining.

When remodeling one or two rooms in a home, it’s important to maintain a flow that makes sense, to help the new seem like it’s always been there and doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. One way we accomplished this for them was helping replace all the flooring in their home so that it was consistent throughout and still blended with the era. They had very specific tastes and were able to select a beautiful hardwood that fit incredibly well. Previously, their home had parkay in the entry, a hardwood through the hallway and carpet in the family area and laminate in the kitchen. Eliminating those cut lines between rooms automatically makes a home look more spacious.

Brooke and Ryan’s home is built on a beautiful creek-side property with lush, mature trees and landscaping. This is such a delightful aspect of their home and it creates a lot of natural shade. One thing they hoped to achieve by remodeling was to add more light in the kitchen. Adding a skylight was a help as was installing more lights in the ceiling. Also, they chose to use white cabinetry and we worked to choose a quartz with exactly the right brightness in the room.

After looking at several backsplash tile options, Brooke found what she loved. It added tons of character to her kitchen along with custom floating shelves we commissioned to have made for their left and right of the hood fan as well as the microwave cabinet shelf.

Another best and most functional change that we designed for them was to move their laundry (that had been inside the pantry) by building a laundry closet inside a room behind the kitchen and create a built in space for the refrigerator where it had previously been along with a true butler pantry. We moved their microwave inside that room as well since it wasn’t a heavily used appliance for their family.

This project was a favorite since it happens to be my personal choice for design, mid-mod. We are grateful that Brooke and Ryan entrusted us to do this remodel. It’s always a blessing to know we helped our clients “change the way they live”. Every element was purposeful to make their home the gathering space they dreamed of having. Even during renovation, after the dividing wall had been removed and all of the kitchen was empty, they recorded their family playing music in the spaciousness of the house. A sweet reflection of all the memories they will make there.

Client Testimony
Brooke McKasson

“We hired Gordon T. Jacob to increase the size of our kitchen, open up a wall separating our kitchen/dining area, and relocate our laundry room. They helped us accomplish this and much more! This was our first remodel experience, and Chris and Mitzi were very patient and flexible when we had changes or were struggling making decisions. They really went the extra mile in helping us achieve the vision. Our custom zellige tile range hood and white oak open shelving are two examples of their willingness to be go the distance for their clients and be creative. Rene and the team were so kind and easy to communicate with, and kept a clean work environment which was so helpful as we were living in the house during the process (in the middle of a pandemic – with four kids!) Chris was great at keeping things on schedule – we trusted him one hundred percent to follow through. Mitzi has a great eye and we appreciated her creativity and ability to put our minds at ease with decision making. Their motto ‘change the way you live’ is definitely true for us, and we are enjoying every minute with our family in our renovated spaces!”
