Garage Conversion to Multigenerational Living
Home Addition in Tacoma

Garage Conversion to Multigenerational Living | Tacoma, WA

When our clients purchased this Tacoma home, the layout left something to be desired. The front door opened into a breezeway rather than a true entry—an in-between space that led either into the main house or into an attached garage that simply wasn’t needed.

With a large detached garage already on the property, the attached garage had become underutilized square footage. Rather than letting that space go to waste, we worked with our clients to completely reimagine both the interior and exterior, transforming the home into a cohesive, functional living environment.

By converting the garage, we were able to design a layout that feels like it was always meant to be there. The new space now includes a welcoming front entry, a comfortable living room, an additional bedroom, a full bathroom, and a thoughtfully designed mudroom/flex space that supports everyday living.

Beyond improving flow and functionality, this project was rooted in something even more meaningful—creating space for family. Our clients are opening their home to a family member, and the updated layout now supports multigenerational living with ease, privacy, and comfort.

This transformation is a great example of how rethinking existing space can completely change how a home lives—without adding onto the footprint.
