The Historic Steilacoom Revival

The Historic Steilacoom Revival

We first met our clients, who had a dream for their home, through a referral from two of their neighbors for whom we had done remodels. We listened to their dreams for the home when they purchased it—dreams that were put on hold while they served our country in the military. We were honored to be chosen to work for them. Together, we collaboratively created a plan that was exceptional.

Our finished plan added over 1,000 square feet of space, which was approved for the back of the home to avoid changing the original historic design of the front.

We took great care to preserve the character of the home in every new space—notice the lighting choices, cabinets hardware, door knobs, and the list goes on.

While creating the most scenic primary suite on the top floor—including a wet room for the double shower and freestanding bath—we chose tile and fixtures that also reflect the home’s character.

Moving on, the original attic rooms were finished with the original windows and unique ceilings. We kept and refinished the original built-in cabinets in one of the rooms, creating a sewing room with bright white walls to ensure all fabrics used for crafting appear true to color.

On the main floor, the original small kitchen was relocated into a spacious, dreamy space with double shaker cherry wood cabinets. We used the original oil-rubbed bronze with crystal knobs on all upper cabinets and found complementary pulls to install on all lower cabinets. A large island, accented with Pental “Azule” Quartz, became our focal point, creating seating on two sides and a large workspace for meal prep. An original chandelier was salvaged to hang over the dining area, which features a large bay window overlooking Puget Sound.

Furthermore, the design extended the living room, recreating arched walkways and coved ceilings.

The living room and kitchen open to a covered deck made with TimberTech, surrounded by a powder-coated aluminum cable rail system.

The basement access was relocated, and a wide staircase was built for ease of access. A large laundry room was added, providing storage for an extra refrigerator and deep freezer just a few steps from the kitchen.

Lastly, a guest bath—designed for beauty and function—was added on the main floor to accommodate aging visitors.

Every part of this home was handled with care and every unique space was made into something special.

Welcome home, Jeremy and Heather. Thank you for your service to our country and for allowing us to “change the way you live” by building your dreams into reality in your home!

“Gordon T Jacobs’ team is great! They were able to somehow maximize every detail that we wanted of our remodel and come right on budget. GTJ are extremely responsive to questions and provide brilliant solutions to complex challenges. They also delivered the keys to the house on time.

They are extremely adept at coordinating the various teams of subcontractors that are part of a remodel and kept us constantly up to date on all progress. They used quality subcontractors that were hard working and did an excellent job. With seamless ease we watched our house completely gutted and rebuilt all the aspects of the house. The details like the coved ceilings are incredible, and they were able to keep our home’s historical character while bringing it up to current modern standards.

Chris was great at bringing the concept to a brilliant design that encompassed all our desired wants within a home. GTJ are outstanding in the design process, collaborating with us the entire time.

Mitzi worked wonders on the selection of fixtures and kept our desires constantly in mind. She also provided sage advice when we were not sure which option we wanted.

Christopher Jr. was steadily on site managing the physical construction and making sure the right subcontractor was there at the right times.

Steven is one of the key members of their team and one of the hardest workers I have ever met.

If I have any future remodel or construction project, I will always go to Gordon T Jacobs.”
