In a previous blog post, we shared some of the key reasons families are choosing to transform their homes or properties to accommodate aging in place instead of assisted living homes—from cost savings to the joy of multigenerational living.
This time, we want to really dig into the details of how a homey, safe space is possible now and for years to come.
If you’re thinking about building a DADU or ADU for a loved one, or remodeling their current home, here are some thoughtful design elements that can make a big difference in their day-to-day comfort and peace of mind.
What to Include in Senior-Friendly Housing:
One-Level Living- A single-story layout creates easier movement throughout the home and allows all necessary rooms to be accessible. If a home is currently two-stories, it is recommended to have the primary bedroom, primary bathroom, and kitchen all on the bottom floor.
Low-Threshold or Step-Free Entry- A slightly sloped ramp and no-step doorway make it easier to enter the home, whether someone uses a walker, wheelchair, or just wants to avoid tripping hazards.
Wide Walkways and Doorways- Hallways and doors should be at least 3 feet wide to allow plenty of space for mobility. This also helps the home feel open and easy to navigate.
Accessible Bathroom Layout- Some simple but important updates to consider:
- A walk-in or curbless shower
- Sturdy grab bars by the toilet and in the shower
- A built-in bench for seated showering
- Hand held shower head
- Extra turning space for walkers or wheelchairs
Continuous Flooring- Transitions between rooms can be a tripping risk. Smooth, consistent flooring throughout the home creates a safer environment.
A Second Room for Caregivers or Family- Many families opt to include a second bedroom that can serve as a guest room, office, or future caregiver suite.
Other Helpful Touches- Things like lever-style door handles, motion lighting, non-slip flooring, and lowered countertops go a long way in creating a home that adjusts gracefully to your loved one’s needs.
The goal with any ADU, DADU, or house remodel isn’t just functionality—it’s to create a space that feels like home. With a few thoughtful choices, you can build a place where your loved ones feel safe, independent, and connected to the people who matter most.
If you’re ready to explore what this could look like for your family, we’d be honored to help guide you through the process.
