North Mullen DADU: A North Tacoma Backyard Transformed
A backyard can be more than just extra outdoor space. With the right property and a thoughtful design, it can become a beautiful, functional home.
Our recent North Mullen DADU in Tacoma is a great example. Our client came to Gordon T. Jacob with a property that was already well-suited for a detached accessory dwelling unit. With alley access, a good-sized backyard, and easily accessible utilities, the property had many of the characteristics that can make a Tacoma DADU project a great fit.
A 705-Square-Foot Tacoma DADU
For her project, our client chose our Baltimore DADU plan, a 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom design with approximately 705 square feet of living space.
The compact floor plan provides a comfortable, fully functional home while making efficient use of the available space. It’s a versatile layout that can work well for a variety of DADU uses, whether you’re planning to create a rental property, additional space for family, or a private home in your own backyard.

Designing the Details
Once construction was underway, our local design team worked with our client to select the finishes and features for her new DADU.
Having an in-house design team allows us to help clients make decisions throughout the building process while keeping the overall design cohesive. Our client especially appreciated having feedback and suggestions as she made her selections.
As she shared in her review:
“They made it extremely easy and provided feedback and suggestions to help me maximize my build’s value and rentability, while staying true to my desired aesthetic.”
The finished DADU has a clean, inviting feel and shows how thoughtful material and finish selections can make a smaller home feel comfortable and complete.
A DADU Built With Clear Communication
Building a DADU involves many moving pieces, from design and selections to construction and project coordination. For our team, keeping clients informed throughout the process is an important part of the experience.
Our client first discovered Gordon T. Jacob while exploring her options for building a DADU in Tacoma. After her initial phone consultation with Chris, she felt confident that she had found a team that cared about her project.
Throughout construction, our team provided weekly updates and kept her informed about the progress of the build, as well as any potential delays or challenges.
She described her experience this way:
“From start to finish, Gordon T Jacob was attentive, dedicated, professional, communicative and incredibly efficient.”
From Rental Property to Potential Home
The original plan was to use the finished DADU as a rental. But once construction was complete and she saw the finished space, our client loved it so much that she’s now considering moving in herself.
We think that’s a pretty great compliment to the finished home.
A DADU can serve many purposes over the years. It can provide rental income, create a place for family or guests, offer a private space for an adult child, or become a home for the property owner. The right design can give homeowners flexibility while making better use of the property they already own.
